Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Microfinance is a business model that aims to provide financial services such as loans, savings, and insurance to low-income individuals or groups who lack access to traditional banking services. The microfinance industry has grown significantly over the past few decades, and it has been lauded for its potential to alleviate poverty and promote economic development in developing countries.
However, recent events in Howrah's Fakir Bagan Lane, under Golabari PS, have highlighted the negative impact that microfinance can have on the lives of vulnerable people. On Saturday a group of individuals attacked the house of a microfinance worker, Vinay Sharma, in anger at the high-interest rates and oppressive practices of the microfinance group in the area.
The attack was brutal and resulted in serious injuries to Vinay Sharma and his family. The attackers used sharp weapons to break into the house and ransack it, leaving the family traumatized and in need of urgent medical attention. The incident has caused shock and outrage in the local community, with many people expressing their anger at the microfinance group and the harm it has caused.
This is not an isolated incident. Across the world, there have been numerous reports of microfinance lenders using aggressive and exploitative tactics to collect high-interest loans from vulnerable people. These tactics can include harassing borrowers, seizing assets, and using violence to extract payments.
The problem with microfinance is that it often operates in areas where traditional banking services are unavailable, leaving people with few options for accessing credit. Microfinance lenders take advantage of this situation by charging exorbitant interest rates and imposing strict repayment terms, which can trap borrowers in a cycle of debt and poverty.
